Nippon TV, Japan’s multiplatform entertainment provider, has announced that its popular variety show, Monday Late Show (Japanese title: Getsuyo kara Yofukashi, meaning “staying up late even on Monday night”), will be available for global catch-up streaming on Netflix from today [May 21st].

Now entering its 15th year on the air, Monday Late Show is a staple of Japanese television, airing every Monday night on Nippon TV. The offbeat show humorously dissects public street interviews on trending topics, highlighting the charming and deeply human characters found in cities, towns, and villages across Japan. Hosting the show are Shingo Murakami of the popular idol group Super Eight, and TV personality Matsuko Deluxe.

Nippon TV’s Kensuke Sawada, Producer of Monday Late Show, commented: “The true charm of this show lies in how it delightfully shatters expectations of what Japanese people are like. It shines a light on ordinary citizens with extraordinary personalities, as well as unique facets of Japan that we’re eager to share with the world, all delivered with plenty of humor. We hope international audiences enjoy the experience.”

Rie Sawaoka, Director of Content at Netflix, added:“Monday Late Show is a truly one-of-a-kind programme that captures the humor, spontaneity, and unpredictable charm of the people and stories it encounters across Japan. Its distinctive perspective and unforgettable personalities have made it a long-standing favorite among audiences in Japan. We’re excited to partner with Nippon TV to introduce this uniquely Japanese iconic show to Netflix members around the world. We hope both longtime fans and first-time viewers alike will enjoy discovering the show’s sharp humor, originality, and unexpected moments.”

Netflix also announced a deal this week to bring a slate of NHK dramas to its streaming platform.
