True Crime commissions Murder in Mind from Back2Back

June 5, 2025

True Crime, the UK destination for crime documentary programming, jointly owned by AMC Networks International – UK and Paramount Global, has announced a new original commission, Murder in Mind, produced by Back2Back in partnership with FilmRise which holds exclusive rights in North America, and Blue Ant Studios. The 10-part series (10×60) is set to premiere on the channel this October, fronted by renowned criminal psychologists Dr Julia Shaw and Kerry Daynes. Blue Ant Studios is overseeing global licensing and distribution for the series outside of commissioning territories.
Timed ahead of Shaw and Daynes’ panel appearance at CrimeCon London, the event dedicated to true crime enthusiasts, on 7 June, where they will explore the psychological drivers of violent crime and offer an exclusive preview of the series, the announcement underscores True Crime’s strategic focus on premium factual content and its continued commitment to developing distinctive, internationally relevant original programming anchored by UK expertise and insight.
Murder in Mind builds on the success of Killers: Caught on Camera – also produced by Back2Back for True Crime – by delivering a similarly archive-rich approach, but with a much stronger psychological and analytical lens. The series examines real murder cases from both the UK and the US, exploring not just what happened, but why it happened. Each episode delivers in-depth psychological analysis of the killer’s mindset and the external factors that may have contributed to their actions, contextualised through expert commentary from criminal psychologists and first-hand accounts. As Kerry Daynes states in the series’ opening: “To truly understand what makes someone want to kill, we have to understand their mindset – how they create the world around them, and how they make sense of the things around them.”
“With Murder in Mind, we worked with Back2Back to create a format that delivers intelligent and detailed psychological analysis, helping our audience come as close as possible to understanding the mindset of someone capable of taking another person’s life,” said Sam Rowden, VP, Content Group, AMC Networks International – UK. “Our viewers are keen to understand and learn from past crimes, and the expert knowledge of Dr Julia Shaw and Kerry Daynes reveals fascinating and often new insights into what drives people to kill.”
Dr Julia Shaw, a psychological scientist at University College London and bestselling author of The Memory Illusion and Making Evil, brings her expertise in criminal psychology and false memory to the format. Kerry Daynes, a registered forensic psychologist with extensive experience working with violent offenders, is the author of The Dark Side of the Mind and a formidable expert in uncovering the complexities of human behaviour, offering profound insight into the minds of those who commit the most disturbing crimes.
The series is designed to appeal to audiences interested in the science behind criminal motives, combining academic insight with emotionally engaging storytelling. Each case is explored through the killer’s own words (where available), alongside expert deconstruction of the behavioural and psychological patterns that underpinned their crimes.
Murder in Mind (10×60) will premiere in the UK on October 5th, airing Wednesdays at 9PM on True Crime.
