LG to acquire HP webOS for TVs
February 26, 2013
A mobile-device operating system that Hewlett-Packard once had high hopes for is set to get a second chance at LG Electronics.
LG will acquire the system, known as webOS, and some of the employees who work on it from HP for an undisclosed amount. LG plans to use webOS in televisions, confirmed Skott Ahn, LG president and chief technology officer.
WebOS was originally developed by Palm to power smartphones that would compete with Apple’s iPhone. The technology was widely praised upon its release, but it failed to gain traction with the developers who write apps for devices.
