South Africa’s media regulator ICASA wants certain key sporting events to be classified as of significant public interest and made available to free-to-air broadcasters.

However, the sporting rights-holders are not happy, arguing that the proposals extend beyond the current situation – where the national teams are involved – to non-international league games and perhaps to inter-provincial events.

The sports federations, along with pay-TV broadcasters are opposing any extensions to the current rules, arguing that the sports organisations will no longer benefit from the cash that flows from the likes of DStv.

Indeed, some sports bodies have been blunt saying they will not be able to support their current activity in terms of finance for youngsters in their teams, without the revenues from major events.
