Canada: TV subs market not affected by cord-cutting
December 17, 2010
Canadian television service providers continue to add subscribers despite the growing presence of online content according to research and consulting firm Boon Dog.
The firm said the traditional TV market added about 29,000 new households in the second quarter of 2010, for a total of about 11.3 million subscriptions.
“While there has been much speculation and talk lately about consumers ‘cutting the cord’ and cancelling their television subscription services in favour of ‘over-the-top’ video services, our latest research shows the traditional Canadian TV distribution market continues to grow,” said Mario Mota, Boon Dog co-founder and partner.
The firm said it expects IPTV to take up a seven per cent market share by the end of 2011, while satellite and cable will take up 31 and 62 per cent, respectively.
Boon Dog said digital television subscribers reached 8.6 million in the second quarter, representing 76 per cent of all subscribers.
