RTVE to launch two new HD channels
October 8, 2019
From David Del Valle in Madrid
Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE, operator of La 1 and La 2, among other channels, is set to launch two new HD channels in January 2020: Canal 24 Horas HD (a news channel) and TVE Internacional HD.
The broadcaster called a public tender to award the technical contract. Telefónica is the most likely candidate to win the tender.
Spain’s current legislation obliges all TV operators to broadcast in HD from January 1st 2023 and with DVB-T2 technology a few months later. The DTT migration (to be completed by June 2020) will allow TV operators to broadcast in a lower band (470-694 MHz) enabling them to turn their SD channels into HD signals.
