Canal Plus to boost original content spend
August 29, 2019
Canal Plus has revealed plans to significantly increase its spending on original content in a continued bid to take on the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
The French pay-TV operator will increase the number of French original series produced each year to between eight and ten, up from the current average of six, and will raise its production budget by 50 per cent to around €90 million Gerald-Brice Viret, programming director, confirmed speaking to Les Echos.
Viret said original series are the third most important factor in attracting subscribers. They also also help to maintain subscribers he suggested, as customers stay on board to see new seasons of popular shows.
