From David Del Valle in Madrid
The Basque-country telco operator Euskaltel has allied with retail chain MediaMarkt to expand into the whole country under the R brand it currently uses in northern regions like Galicia, León and La Rioja.
Under the agreement, Euskaltel will market its convergent package through MediaMarkt’s 87 stores across Spain and via the company`s website. The offer will be available by mid June in 15 MediaMarkt’s stores before expanding into the entire chain by September.
The new national R will offer high-speed fixed broadband, mobile telephony and up to 80 TV channels through its 4K Android TV STB as well as an integrated Netflix service.
The agreement, for 5 years, also includes a dedicated TV channel for companies, special plans for iPhone customers and advantages for Euskaltel Group and MediaMarkt Club members. Euskaltel will use Orange’s FTTH network already present in 13.8 million homes with plans to reach 16 million in 2020.
With this move, Euskaltel becomes the fifth largest telco operator in Spain this coming soon after the UK’s Zegona investor has taken control of the group.
