China-backed StarTimes Media says it is ramping up its pay-TV presence in Africa.
StarTimes Media’s Kenyan VP Mark Lisboa, speaking at an event in Nairobi where he introduced a range of digital TV sets, said that by the end of this year StarTimes would be active in 20 African countries. Currently the broadcaster is active in 14 sub-Saharan countries including Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and Tanzania.
He added that this year’s plans included expansion into Egypt, Angola, Namibia and Swaziland.
StarTimes claims more than 10 million subscribers to its range of pay-broadcasts. It has an overall portfolio of some 440 different channels.
