BT Sport: “We’re in more pubs than Sky Sports”
August 18, 2014
BT has claimed more pubs and clubs now subscribe to its sports channels than to Sky Sports.
The telco has built up what it says is a leading position in a crucial part of the market for pay-TV sport, by undercutting BSkyB. The company entered the market last summer claiming typical savings of as much as 78 per cent on a pub Sky subscription.
BT said it had increased the overall number of pubs with a sports subscription by at least 26 per cent at the end of last season.
A typical pub Sky subscription costs about £15,000, (€18,700) according to the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers. Both BT and BSkyB have increased their prices for the new season, but BT Sport remains a cheaper option, albeit with just 38 Premier League matches compared to Sky Sports’ 116.
At the end of last season BT’s pubs business had signed up 19,000 establishments, which was just behind BSkyB.
