Strong debut for Mortal Kombat on HBO Max
April 27, 2021

Following the success of Godzilla vs Kong, HBO Max has another streaming hit on its hands.
Nearly 3.8 million US households watched the new Mortal Kombat movie during its opening weekend, with viewership peaking at 1.7 million households on April 23rd, according to an analysis by Samba TV.
That’s more viewership in just three days (Fri-Sun) than Godzilla vs Kong achieved in its first five (3.6 million), following that film’s release on HBO Max. This makes Mortal Kombat, based on the long-running video game series, the most-watched HBO Max premiere that Samba TV has tracked.

The weekend Mortal Kombat audience skewed slightly female (+2.2 per cent) and younger (44 years old and below) with Black (+37 per cent) Hispanic (+28 per cent) and Asian (+1.4 per cent) viewers also over-indexing.
The movie is currently not available in the UK, but could be in Cineworld cinemas when they reopen next month, as part of their deal with Warner Bros.
