Aerospace giant Airbus says its space division, which a year ago was anxious about its prospects, has seen business rebound and has successfully met its financial targets making it well-positioned to reap the benefits of surging demand from European governments.

In a July 21st investor conference, Airbus management did not precisely reveal its Q2 2026 performance, which will be detailed on July 29th during the company’s Q2 results release. But the recent positive improvement in profitability is improving faster than the company had anticipated.

“We have entered into a deep turnaround of our space activities and I am very happy to share with you that we are ahead of the trajectory we had given to you.,” Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury said. “So space is also moving forward in a very nice way.”

“As we ramp up across all our businesses, working to meet strong demand for our portfolio of innovative civil and military solutions, our priorities are clear,” added Faury. “Our trajectory fuels our profitable growth, creating value for our customers, employees, partners and shareholders as we continue to pioneer sustainable aerospace for a safe and united world.”

Airbus had restructured its Defence & Space division and largely caused by problems with its OneSat software-defined satellites (already much delayed and the first not expected to be delivered for another year). The OneSat, project saw Airbus badly underestimating the challenges in bringing to market a fully software-defined satellite.

The return to profitability and growth, powered by increased demand from European governments, shows sign of slowing down. A newly reorganised, slimmer Airbus Space division can hope to win a large share of the market, said analysts.
