Analysis: BBC iPlayer traffic up 75% as England beat France

After England’s semi-final defeat on July 15th ended hopes of bringing the World Cup home, the assumption may have been that fans would switch off rather than stay up for the third-place match. But BT network analysis suggests there was still a clear appetite to see how England’s tournament would end.
During England v France on July 18th, peak BBC iPlayer traffic was 75 per cent higher than the peak recorded during the equivalent 10pm–midnight period in an average week. The match also coincided with a noticeable change in wider Saturday-night streaming habits. Netflix traffic fell by up to 27.4 per cent and YouTube traffic by up to 13.6 per cent, suggesting households paused some of their usual on-demand entertainment to follow England’s final game, with traffic beginning to recover after full time.
While the match attracted lower overall traffic than the semi-final and tournament final, the figures indicate that disappointment over missing out on the trophy didn’t entirely diminish interest in seeing the team secure third place.
England won the thrilling game 6-4 – which included the Three Lions taking a 4-0 lead into the dressing room at half-time before France found some form in the second half. Bukayo Saka scored a hat-trick for England with Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and Ezri Konza scoring the other goals. Les Bleus’ scorers were Kylian Mbappé (tw0), Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembélé. The victory meant England finished the tournament in third place – their highest finish since winning the World Cup in 1966.
The figures completes EE’s analysis of England’s World Cup campaign. Across the eight matches, peak BBC iPlayer or ITVX traffic ranged from 75 per cent to 683 per cent above the equivalent average-week peak, with Mexico v England on July 6th producing the largest proportional uplift. England v Argentina on July 15th remained the largest live streaming event ever seen on BT’s network, with traffic exceeding the previous record by nearly 30 per cent.
