Only one organisation has applied for a German media licence covering the nation with DVB-T2 frequencies. Media Broadcast has applied to the ZAK licensing and supervision authority for permission to operate, and a decision should be made on March 17th.

Broadcasters currently using the DVB-T standard have to start adopting T2 early next year, and the first urban areas are expected to be switched over fully by 2019.

ZAK, the licensing authority, is made up of legal representatives of the 14 state (Lander) media regulatory bodies.

Cologne-based Media Broadcast was formed in 2008 when it emerged from the T-Systems Media & Broadcast sale of the Deutsche Telekom business. It currently plays out TV and radio transmissions via its existing DVB-T transmitters, as well as to satellite.
