Hong Kong-based telecommunications services provider City Telecom is seeking a television licence. The company has submitted a licence application for a ‘Domestic Free Television Programme Service’ in Hong Kong. City Telecom plans to transmit television signals via the fibre network of wholly-owned subsidiary HKBN and interconnect to the existing common in-building coaxial cable distribution system to each individual home. The viewer would not require additional equipment for analogue TV reception, while a standard digital set-top box, would be required for the reception of digital TV signal.

The company expects to invest HKD 210 million before reaching breakeven. Should the company be granted a licence, it will launch services within nine months and expects to provide coverage throughout Hong Kong by 2016.
