Early success for Starlink D2C in New Zealand

July 8, 2025

One NZ, the cellular operator in New Zealand, reports that more than 2 million text messages have been carried via Starlink satellites since the service was introduced six months ago.

More than 40 types of smartphones are now enabled to text via space with Starlink and SpaceX, and most messages are sent or received within 30 seconds.

One NZ is using the news to promote an invite to non-subscribers, and an offer of free service for 30 days by signing up. “Whether you’re travelling through a black spot, a back paddock, or there’s a blackout, you can TXT when you need it most with an eligible phone,” says the promo. “Send and receive TXTs anywhere with a line of sight to the sky and an eligible phone – even if you’re in the middle of nowhere.”
