Microsoft v Apple on ‘Apps’
January 13, 2011
Apple and Microsoft are locked in a dispute after the former’s attempt to trademark the term ’app store’ with Microsoft countered by filing a motion with the US Patent and Trademark Office.
It claims the term is too generic to warrant use by just one company, given that other technology companies, including itself, Nokia and Google, sell apps via their own stores. Microsoft says “App store is a generic name that Apple should not be permitted to usurp for its exclusive use.”
Apple initially attempted to trademark the term in 2008 following the launch of its branded App Store.
