Starlink connectivity for Wizz Air

Wizz Air, a European low-cost airline, has announced plans to roll out Starlink connectivity across its fleet in 2027.

“Ultra-low-cost travel has always been about making opportunities accessible to more people,” commented Ian Malin, Chief Commercial Officer of Wizz Air. “In 2027, we’re taking that philosophy into the space era. Our customers shouldn’t have to choose between affordable fares and reliable internet onboard to stay connected to the people, work, and moments that matter most. We’re proud to lead that change by collaborating with Starlink to bring maximum benefit to Wizz Air.”

Installations will begin to roll out in 2027. Passengers will be able to enjoy high-speed, reliable, low-latency internet at 30,000 feet and every new generation Wizz Air aircraft is expected to be Starlink-equipped, ensuring a consistent onboard experience regardless of route or destination.

Keeping passengers and crew seamlessly connected at 30,000 feet is exactly what this technology was built to do. We look forward to delivering reliable, high-speed internet from departure to arrival,” added Jason Fritch, Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales at SpaceX.
Separately, Alaska Airlines says its customers will get more value from its Starlink partnership rather than earning loyalty points on a basic economy seat, writes Chris Forrester.
“We now offer Starlink. Before, to bring someone into Atmos [its loyalty programme], it was about points earning, but that Saver customer in our research is going to value the Starlink product a lot more than a nominal points accrual,” said Alaska Airlines VP/loyalty, alliances and international at the airline.
Meanwhile, there are reports from Helsinki that Finnair is assessing the differences and benefits between Starlink and Amazon Leo for their in-flight connectivity. Finland’s flag carrier is in talks with both providers and wants a plan in place this year, CEO Turkka Kuusisto told Bloomberg, though he says it is too early to name a decision date. “We are in talks with all of the service providers.”
However, there’s also been a negative report which concerns British Airways (BA) which has only fitted five of its aircraft with Starlink kit. It seems that BA simply isn’t allowing enough time during an aircraft’s ‘maintenance down time’ to fit the equipment.
British Airways managed to install Starlink on only five of its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners before the retrofit programme suddenly ground to a halt — none of their 12 Deamliner (787-8) aircraft had Wi-Fi installed since they were introduced into service about 12 years ago.
