The Cowboy Space business has filed with the FCC for permission to mount 20,000 satellites for a constellation named Stampede. It has raised $275 million to help fund its ambitions.

Based in Silicon Valley’s San Carlos, California, Cowboy Space made its filing on May 14th saying it wanted to start launches in 2028.

The filing talks of the fleet being in sun-synchronous orbits of between 700-1,000 kms and would use the sun’s energy for power and tap the freezing cold of space to keep the on-board technology cool.

“Stampede is designed with scalability in mind and is capable of beginning commercial operations with as little as a single satellite in orbit [and will] progressively launch satellites and build out the system over the following months and years,” according to COO Joseph Yaffe in the FCC filing.

The Cowboy Space filing adds to existing plans from SpaceX (1 million satellites), Starcloud’s 88,000 satellites, and Blue Origin’s 51,600 craft called Project Sunrise.
