Taiwan wants a mega-constellation

Taiwan telco Chungwa Telecom’s European division (which is 35 per cent owned by Taiwan’s government) has filed a six satellite request to build and launch a fleet of low Earth orbiting craft. The coordination filing has been made to the ITU via Germany (Taiwan is not a member of the ITU).
However, while the six satellite fleet is hardly a ‘mega-constellation’ experts suggest that there will probably be a need for around 100 satellites to make a meaningful fleet. A 100-satellite fleet would ensure that there would be round two satellites always over Taiwan.
The six satellites, which are called B5G-1, will orbit at 600 kms.
Taiwan has not authorised Starlink to operate within the country. However, it uses Eutelsat’s OneWeb for satellite connectivity.
