Analysis: DIGI makes a splash in Belgium
December 16, 2024
Ookla has analysed the potential impact of the recently announced entry of DIGI in Belgium, which shifts the market from a three- to four-player structure.
DIGI aims to achieve 30 per cent 5G population coverage by the end of 2025 and establish a network of 4,500 sites in Belgium by 2030.
Key takeaways include:
- DIGI’s national roaming agreement with Proximus is restricted to its 4G network:
- According to Speedtest Intelligence data from Q3 2024, Proximus led the market in 4G download speed performance (55.68 Mbps) and outperformed Telenet (47.91 Mbps) and Orange (36.22 Mbps).
- However, in the same period, Proximus lagged behind its competitors in 4G Availability. Telenet led the market with 93.74 per cent 4G Availability, followed by Orange at 86.02 per cent and Proximus at 81.07 per cent.
- DIGI’s fibre offering is highly competitive in the Belgian market context: it plans to pass two millions households within two years and promises speeds of up to 10 Gbps.
- DIGI is placing significant emphasis on Wi-Fi performance, providing Wi-Fi 6-capable CPE as standard and preparing to introduce Wi-Fi 7 solutions.
- DIGI’s entry into Belgium has ignited a price war, prompting competitor Orange to respond with aggressive pricing that matches DIGI’s offerings.
