IHS: Q1 demand for large screen sizes increases
May 18, 2018
Sales analysis from IHS Market shows that the demand for larger screen sizes showed better than expected results for the first 3 months of the year, normally a weaker portion of the year.
According to the Large Area Display Market Tracker, shipments of large displays increased by 6 per cent in unit and by 10 per cent in area compared to the same period last year.
LG Display, which leads the market, terms ‘large’ as anything over 9” (that is mobile phone and tablet screens) and the IHS data shows that overall sales increased 6 per cent in terms of units shipped, and 10 per cent in area (of glass) shipped.
Looking specifically at TV displays, the shipments increased 12 per cent in terms of units (and 11 per cent in area). In particular, unit shipments of 55-inch and larger TV panels jumped 20 per cent year on year in the first quarter. 4K TV display unit shipment also increased by 19 per cent during the same period to 24.6 million units, and OLED TV display shipments reached some 600,000 units with 110 per cent year-on-year growth.
