Chase Carey, chairman and chief executive of Formula One, has suggested that online and linear broadcasting can enhance each other, with a large number of potential fans not currently connecting with the sport.
Speaking to the Sunday Times, Carey said: “We have 400 million to 500 million fans around the world and don’t have a database that allows us to connect with them,” implying that deals could be done with OTT platforms.
Echoing comments he made in an interview with specialist magazine Autosport, Carey said that while there were “always going to be conflicts”, the digital giants and broadcasters could enhance each other. “If you’ve got a millennial who doesn’t really watch TV and you can put stuff on their iPhone, maybe you can turn a non-fan into a fan.”
