Jeremy Darroch, CEO of Sky, has declared the broadcaster to be a growth business, having started out as a “challenger” in the TV industry. Speaking at a MIPTV event in Cannes marking his receipt of the Variety magazine 2016 Achievement in International Television Award, he said that what started out very early was a commitment to change, to innovate. “We’re a restless business, we have a challenger mind-set.”
Discussing the challenges of merging the three Sky operations in the UK, Germany and Italy, Darroch noted that bringing the businesses together enabled growth. “We’re a growth business. We always have been and we always will be,” he declared.
He said that bringing the Skys together enabled the company to reset its horizons for growth and expose itself to an opportunity of some 60 million people across Europe who were not yet pay-TV subscribers.
He suggested that bringing the three businesses together and the best of all of them gave a greater capability across the organisation to seize the opportunities ahead.
