Sony Pictures Digital Productions, which looks after Sony’s 4K post-production Colorworks unit, is selling the division to rival DeLuxe. Colorworks is a 14,000 sq ft Stage 6 facility based in Sony’s giant Culver City studio complex.
Terms of the deal, which closed February 1st, were not revealed.
Sony’s Colorworks has been extremely busy remastering many of its classic movies and is responsible for the 4K work on series such as Breaking Bad. Sony will keep the Colorworks name. It has pioneered workflows and processes for 4K.
Sony’s official statement said: “Sony Pictures has made the business decision to close its Colorworks facility. We are pleased to enter into a services agreement with Deluxe to offer state-of-the-art colour grading, mastering, restoration and related services for film and TV projects by studios, networks, independent producers and film-makers at Sony Pictures.”
DeLuxe already operates from facilities at Fox and Universal.
