IMAX expands in Russia

Giant cinema screen operator IMAX is developing a number of new screens in a partnership with Russian owners. Toronto-based IMAX last week signed an agreement to add IMAX-equipped theatres with Formula Kino in Moscow and other cities.
The deal will mean that Russia will get its first Laser-generated IMAX projectors, and the first cinemas will open in 2015, said the company. Three of the screens will be in Moscow itself, and bring the number of IMAX theatres in Russia to 8. The company has 3 screens in St Petersburg, although Formula Kino operates 37 theatres across Russia and the Ukraine.
“Not only is it the first in Russia to commit to our laser technology, but it will be adding the system to what is sure to be an iconic multiplex in Russia — a tremendous vote of confidence in the value we deliver.” Andrew Cripps, head of Imax EMEA, said in a statement.
