Discovery, as well as being an investor in 3net which is already shooting programming in Ultra-HD, is also fancying 4K/Ultra HD content. Glenn Oakley, Discovery’s EVP/media technology is a fan. He was previously EVP/GM at Rainbow Media’s Rush HD, part of Rainbow’s VOOM high-resolution service.
Speaking to Multichannel News, Oakley said Discovery was always looking to see what new technologies might emerge, “and 4K looks very, very promising”. He told the trade mag that much still needed to happen before Discovery itself was likely to make a 4K move, not least production equipment, distribution networks that could handle the video and in-home technology become more readily available. But Discovery was already testing 4K cameras and post-production processes.
