Netflix: 4bn hours in Q1
April 12, 2013
Netflix members watched more than four billion hours of video during the first three months of 2013, according to CEO Reed Hastings, who posted the figures on Facebook and attributed the uplift to its exclusive House Of Cards show.
The post led BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield to figure out that if Netflix was a cable channel, it would be the most watched daily: “We believe Netflix streaming per sub/day is now over 87 minutes and, in turn, Netflix is now likely the most watched cable network, essentially in-line with the Disney Channel.”
While Hastings’ comment was a global count, Greenfield’s analysis assumes that just over 88 per cent of that streaming occurred within the U.S. For comparison, last summer, Greenfield surmised that Netflix subscribers were streaming 79 minutes per day in, making it the seventh-most watched network for June 2012, reported MCN.
