Facebook to pay video curators
July 6, 2015
Facebook is set to start paying some video creators for uploading clips as it seemingly seeks to directly take on YouTube.
The social media giant is launching a ‘Suggested Videos’ feed that curates a sequence of clips, interspersed with adverts. Videos that keep users watching for longer will earn a greater share of the revenue from these ads, with Facebook keeping 45 per cent for itself.
Facebook is currently testing the Suggested Videos feed for iPhone users in the US and that the revenue-sharing arrangement will not begin immediately. While YouTube allows almost any user to monetise their content, Facebook says it is working with a group of media companies and chosen individuals for the time being.
Facebook says its users currently clock up four billion video views daily.
