Oil-rich Gulf state Kuwait says it wants to launch an independent television and radio organisation to “compete globally”, and would be free from Kuwaiti government control or influence. This is important in that Kuwait has a record of shutting down locally-based TV stations which criticised the government.

The new TV station will be free from government interference according to Kuwait’s Minister of Information Sheikh Salman Sabah Salem Al Humoud Al Sabah, quoted in a statement carried by the state news agency KUNA.

His statement added: “We always seek the best and the world is heading towards restructuring [media] sectors to be bodies that enjoy more capabilities and administrative and technical freedom away from government and official bureaucracy that cripples in certain points specialised technical work. Our goal is to have a TV that is leading and pioneering in form and content.”
