AST SpaceMobile readies for Canadian connectivity

November 18, 2025

By Chris Forrester

World-be global broadband and satellite connectivity operator AST SpaceMobile is preparing for Canadian direct-to-device distribution (D2D) of its signals.

AST is already partnering with Bell Canada to conduct successful tests of its space-based cellular network in Canada, including voice, video, and broadband data calls on standard smartphones. This collaboration, confirmed by tests in October, aims to provide seamless satellite connectivity across Canada’s remote areas and is expected to lead to the planned deployment of a direct-to-cell service in 2026. But first it needs regulatory approvals.

Earlier in November, AST filed a lobbying registration in Canada to secure that regulatory approval and for the use of L-band spectrum for its D2D service. This regulatory work is essential for the company to be able to utilise it’s Ligado L-Band North American rights in Canada (and which it also holds over the US). This should potentially open the door for future Canadian government & military contracts as well as L-Band use is very vital for those communications.
