Revenues from Over-the-top TV services are set for years of strong growth, according to the latest report by ITMedia Consulting.
In its ‘Next Generation Television’ report, the Rome-based consultancy predicts a 110 per cent growth per year by 2014 throughout Western Europe, including Italy. At the end of 2011, revenues of the entire sector amounted to €340 million, a fraction of the total revenue of TV broadcasters, but this figure will exceed €3 billion in three years.
In Italy, Fastweb TV and Telecom Italia’s Cubovision have been providing a similar service for some time. Commercial broadcaster Mediaset announced its Premium Net TV service last month, while DTH operator Sky Italia will launch its own offering during 2011.
In a related development, the CEO of Telecom Italia, Franco Bernabe’, announced that the company’s business plan includes the development of NGN by 2012 in Italy’s 13 largest cities using an FTTH architecture, as well as another 125 cities (of which 27 in 2013) using FTTC architecture.
