The French-backed ‘4-Ever’ research and development project has come to an end. Its nine core partners include Orange, France Télévisions, Globecast and ATEME, and the focus was very much on 4K/Ultra HD transmission and in particular how UHD could advance with High Dynamic Range (HDR) and higher frame rates.

The research project, under the leadership of Maryline Clare-Charrier, has been running since 2012 being renamed as 4-Ever-2 for the last two years.

It managed to secure significant industry recognition and praise for its often-pioneering work. Indeed, 4-Ever-2 was given the NAB 2016 Technology Award, the first-ever for a French project and for its work on HDR/HFR transmission.

It recently showcased a live ‘real time’ UHD transmissions under the advanced UHD/Phase-2 specifications with HDR and at 100 frames/second during an ice-hockey match (France vs Switzerland, April 9th) and including Dolby AC-4 audio.  The event, which included satellite transmission, was a world’s first for the technology.

The 4-Ever-2 consortium has published many White Papers and research results for the broadcast community.
