McKinsey: ‘Star Wars Day’ sees Aerospace at an Inflection point

May 4, 2026

A report from analysts at McKinsey & Co, issued to coincide with ‘May the 4th be with you’, says that the Star Wars Day captures our imagination with visions of interstellar exploration and technological possibility.

“This May 4th, those themes are increasingly reflected in the real-world evolution of the aerospace and defence sector. From the rise of commercial aerospace suppliers to the need to rewire operations for speed and growth, the industry is undergoing a transformation that mirrors the scale of science fiction – while remaining firmly rooted in immediate strategic imperatives,” said the report.

“For aerospace and defense leaders, the challenge is to define their role in an increasingly complex and competitive ecosystem. Success will depend on building the right partnerships, scaling capabilities, and navigating shifting geopolitical dynamics. Dive into these insights and see what it takes to capture value in a rapidly expanding frontier,” McKinsey added.

The report suggests that the Space Sector is at an inflection point similar to what commercial air travel experienced after World War II and the internet saw in the 1990s, noting: ”We assert that space is a timely topic for all leaders. Today, the space economy is valued at nearly half a trillion dollars and is growing at about 9 per cent annually. Massive technological innovation is creating the opportunity for more capabilities to be deployed above Earth for the benefit of those on Earth. These capabilities – and the prices at which they can be delivered – could provide the linchpin in solving hard problems not only for businesses but also for civilisation and the health of the planet. This creates an imperative for executives: if space isn’t part of your strategy, it needs to be.”
