Survey: How creative sector is responding to climate crisis
September 25, 2025
The creative industries have a vital role to play in tackling climate change. Not only by reducing our own environmental impact, but by using the Creative Industries Council’s (CIC) capacity to drive awareness, influence behaviour and generate solutions.
Back in 2023, industry members of the CIC signed the Creative Climate Charter, pledging to take ambitious action on the climate and biodiversity crisis. A year on from the launch of the Charter, the CIC’s Climate Group surveyed members to measure progress made so far.
The results show that leaders across the creative industries are committed to climate action. The survey highlights the encouraging progress made so far by organisations in the sector, as well as some of the challenges they face.
Key findings included:
- 86 per cent of respondents say commitment of creative organisations’ leadership is the most important internal factor promoting climate action
- 79 per cent took part in an industry initiative on sustainability in the last year
- 76 per cent of respondents have a designated senior figure in their organisation leading on sustainability issues
- 34 per cent say challenges in organisations’ capacity and skills constrain their progress on climate action
Building on the Charter and the survey, the CIC Climate Group has identified eight priorities for government and industry to take forward, in order to unlock the full contribution the sector can make to a more sustainable future.
- Establish ongoing and substantial research on the creative industries and the environment, which could build on the survey and other research work already undertaken by the Creative PEC
- Encourage creative employers to improve the existing provision of staff training in environmental and climate fields
- Build on existing measurements of environmental impact of more complex carbon emissions and waste streams
- Work with strategic funding bodies to design ambitious programmes to fund the development of new ways to decarbonise and reduce waste
- Support environmental accreditation in creative subsectors to spread best practice and guide funding and commissioning
- Improve the collection and availability of useful environmental data, providing guidance on presentation and practical use of this data
- Work to stimulate the market for green products, services and advice to meet industry needs and encourage sustainable procurement
- Share and enhance the extensive best practice across creative subsectors, supporting wider reapplication of initiatives
