The FCC has issued AST SpaceMobile (AST) and its key US partners AT&T, Verizon and FirstNet its formal public notice that it is minded to grant formal permission for AST’s recognition that it can operate as a full ‘Supplemental Coverage from Space Authorisation (SCSA) system. The FCC invites public comments by October 6th.
There isn’t much doubt that the FCC’s move will be accepted. The official invitation for final comments comes from the FCC and also from the US Space Bureau (SB), the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau and Homeland Security.
On August 29th, the Satellite Programs and Policy Division within SB granted-in-part and deferred-in-part AST’s modification application, as amended in the first instance, authorising AST to deploy 20 additional satellites and to perform key management tasks using those satellites.
The FCC talks of the full AST constellation of 248 satellites, and lists the frequencies the system will use for space transmissions and then terrestrial access on certain 800 and 700 MHz frequency bands.
