Academy: “AI can win Oscars”
April 22, 2025
Movies created with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) will be able to win awards at the Oscars, says its organisers.
In publishing its new rules and promotional regulations for the 98th Oscars Ceremony (scheduled for March 15th 2026), The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued said the use of AI and other digital tools would not harm (or help) the chances of winning an award, but also added it would take human involvement into account.
The key paragraph stated: “With regard to Generative Artificial Intelligence and other digital tools used in the making of the film, the tools neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination. The Academy and each branch will judge the achievement, taking into account the degree to which a human was at the heart of the creative authorship when choosing which movie to award.”
The use of AI in film became a hot topic after Adrian Brody won the award for Best Actor for his role in The Brutalist at this year’s Oscars ceremony in March. The movie used generative AI to improve the actor’s Hungarian accent. Read Nick Snow’s blog on the matter here.
