Business channels bumped by Trump tariffs
April 9, 2025
The Trump tariffs on imports have boosted the cable channels who cover those markets. CNBC and Fox Business Network both saw their ratings jump significantly in the days after the announcement on April 2nd, which US President Donald Trump dubbed ‘Liberation Day’.
CNBC averaged 293,000 viewers during market hours, up 36 per cent. Fox Business had similar gains: the network drew 234,000 viewers, up 15 per cent from its March average.
CNBC brought in more viewers in the key news demographic of adults 25-54 during market hours last week. It also says it had a big traffic surge online, with 83 per cent more page views than the weekday average for the first quarter across its website, mobile app and Google Amp. New subscriptions to its direct-to-consumer offerings grew by 34 per cent compared to the first quarter average.
