India Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) says the nation has more than 40.54 million ‘active’ DTH subscribers (as at December 31st). This is up on the previous quarter’s (to September 30th) 39.13 million. However the number is well down on the total ‘registered’ subscriber base of 73.06 million, which suggests that around 30 million homes are no longer paying for TV services through their dishes.
The TRAI data comes from the various DTH broadcasters themselves as part of their obligatory quarterly reporting statistics.
TRAI says that there were 245 registered pay-TV channels on air as at January 31st 2015.
However, the total number of channels available digitally to DTH and cable viewers is 398.
