BBC cuts: BBC HD out, BBC2 HD in
October 6, 2011
The BBC has been naming the cuts required for a 20 per cent budget saving over five years – the licence fee has been frozen for that period.
No content services are going but BBC 3 and 4 have been reclassified as ‘feeder’ services for BBC1 and 2.
As such there will be no need for BBC HD as a cross-network HD showcase as everything will end up on 1 or 2 (unless it’s a complete flop) so BBC HD will be replace by a BBC2 HD simulcast.
The BBC says it will cut about 2,000 posts (around 10 per cent) over five years and is considering selling its White City complex in west London as well as TV Centre.
