Thailand’s National Broadcasting & Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has approved its next stage of digital TV’s terrestrial roll-out in the nation.

NBTC says it will distribute 11 million ‘vouchers’ to deserving households which have not already received a voucher. Eligible households include those living in social housing and include “state enterprise” officials, said a statement.

The vouchers can be used to buy set-top boxes which are good for Thailand’s approved transmission standard (channels 1-36).

NBTC’s secretary general, Thakorn Tanthasit, also stated that his organisation was looking to auction advertising time and was considering lowering annual broadcast leasing fees. This is designed to soften the grumbles coming from some digital broadcasters who have complained that the licence fees are too high.
