Spain: Private TV dominates FTA
January 5, 2016
From David Del Valle in Madrid
The duopoly in the Spanish FTA TV market is intensifying with the two largest private TV groups Mediaset and Atresmedia taking 58 per cent of the audience ratings and 86 per cent of ad revenues.
Operating six TV channels (Tele 5, Cuatro, FDF, Divinity, Energy and Boing), Mediaset has a TV share of 31 per cent. Atresmedia makes 26.8 per cent with five TV channels (Antena 3, La Sexta, Neox, Nova and Mega). Their duopoly is to strengthen with the forthcoming launch of a new DTT channel each one, with other private TV groups like Vocentoand Unidad Editorial only drawing 3.4 per cent and 4.2 per cent, respectively.
By contrast, public TV broadcasters are dramatically falling with TVE making less than 10 per cent in 2015, something that never happened in its 60 year’s of operations, according to the consultancy firm Barlovento Comunicacion. Public Regional TV stations are also biting the dust with a minimum average of 7.5 per cent.
