France could tax STBs
September 3, 2015
The French government has confirmed it will not expand the TV licence fee to smartphones and tablets, despite widespread rumours suggesting the opposite. French culture minister Fleur Pellerin made the announcement on French radio station France Info.
However Pellerin said the tax could yet be applied to STBs as TV consumption is now more common on these devices than through TV aerials.
The decision will be made by the prime minister and president in the coming days. President Hollande has been pushing for public broadcasting to be independent, financed by the TV tax rather than budget subsidies.
