Japanese public broadcaster NHK’s president has confirmed he will step down in January. Masayuki Matsumoto heads up NHK’s executive team, which reports to NHK’s board of governors. Matsumoto moved to NHK from Central Japan Railway Co. where he was vice chairman and had no broadcasting experience prior to his controversial appointment three years ago.

However, he is widely credited with beginning to restore NHK’s damaged reputation which had led to a percentage of viewers declining to pay its “reception fee”.

“I fulfilled my responsibility during a single three-year term,” Matsumoto said at a regular press briefing. He said his intention has already been conveyed to the chairman of NHK’s board of governors, Kenichiro Hamada, who has the authority to name the new president.

Matsumoto will leave on January 24th.
