BSNL to subsidise STBs for rural homes

Indian telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) will use the Universal Service Obligation (USO) fund to subsidise rural households purchasing home entertainment devices for viewing, programming and surfing the Net using its broadband network. BSNL has tied up with Hyderabad-based iChip Technologies for deploying the latter's @Box compact home entertainment device across rural areas in Andhra Pradesh and later in other states. The @Box provides a range of Web-based applications such as Web browsing, e-mail, IPTV, VoIP, internet gaming and video conferencing on a television set.
