Brazilian pay-TV operator GVT says its DTH service cannot currently comply with the nation’s ‘must carry’ rules of free-to-air services because it does not have spare bandwidth on its satellite. The failure earlier this year of Intelsat-27which would have provide much-needed extra capacity, means it is “impossible” for the obligations to be honoured.

Brazil’s regulator (Anatel) had set a date of August 21 for a start of the obligatory services. GVT is carrying 5 of the national channels, but is missing 9 further FTA services. GVT says it has been in contact with the broadcasters concerned, and the regulator, to explain the situation.

Anatel says that GVT recognises its obligations.
