Luxembourg-based satellite operator SES is to launch a high-throughput broadband service for Germany offering up to 20 Mb/s download, starting later this year.  SES Broadband Services will supply the technology on a wholesale basis to local ISPs.

The concept is to tap into the demand from poorly or underserved homes in suburban and rural locations. SES will use Ka-band technology operating from its Astra 2E launching in a few weeks from the Baikonur, Kazakhstan cosmodrome.

SES says that its service will be “highly competitive”, which is understood to mean that it will match – or perhaps improve on – those services recently announced by Eutelsat.
