The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the future framework that will apply to state funding of public service broadcasting, amending EU laws set out in 2001.

The commission said key issue for discussion are the public service remit in the new media environment. Competition commissioner Neelie Kroes said: “The present broadcasting framework provides valuable guidance to media companies, public broadcasters and member states alike, but there may be ways it can usefully be improved to increase transparency and legal certainty.”

The consultation is open until March 10, then a revised proposal will be prepared in consultation with member state competition authorities, for final adoption in the first half of 2009.
