The US Department of War has awarded a $2 billion (€1.7bn) contract to Boeing for its Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) service life extension. The solution, often described as a ‘space tug’ is a rescue mission comprising two satellites.
Work will be performed at Boeing’s plant at El Segundo, California, and is expected to be completed by September 30th 2035. The maximum $2,002,862,607 fixed-price-incentive-firm-target contract covers the design, development, build, launch support, and on-orbit test support of two MUOS satellites.
The Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) is a US Space Force narrowband military communications satellite system that supports a worldwide, multi-service population of users in the ultra-high frequency (UHF) band. The system provides increased communications capabilities to newer, smaller terminals while still supporting interoperability with legacy terminals. MUOS is designed to support users who require greater mobility, higher bit rates and improved operational availability. The MUOS was declared fully operational for use in 2019.
