Luxembourg mulls second GovSat

GovSat is a joint-venture between the Luxembourg government and local satellite operator SES. The satellite, which focuses its capacity on European military and the need for highly-secure communications, was launched in 2018.
Although its concept was looked at with some scepticism it has proved to be highly successful and now Luxembourg’s Minister of Defence Yuriko Backes says that with its NATO partners it is considering a GovSat-2.
Backes told delegates at a military conference (GovSatCom 2025) that there was a need to strengthen this European pillar of NATO. The existing satellite uses X-band and the military portion of Ka-band for its frequencies.
